For beach lovers, try Silvermine Beach, Cheung Sha Beach and Pui O Beach. For general trekking, there are a lot of short and friendly tracks here and there on the island but for serious trekkers, it’s best to contact the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (Tel (852) 2984 7675) beforehand as for certain areas permission is needed.
Mui Wo Village was once the biggest settlement on Lantau Island. It has lovely scenery; beach, waterfall and mountain. There are quite a few historical sites including a few beautiful temples (one of them, Man Mo Temple, dates back to the 16th century) and a watchtower from the 19th century. Visitors who prefer to do it by bicycle can rent one from shops nearby the pier for a very reasonable price.

Cheung Sha is the longest beach on Lantau Island but it is almost separated by a small headland. The beach usually gets crowded during the weekends and public holidays. Visitors come for picnics, swimming, kite surfing and beach volleyball. During the monsoon season, this beach is busy with surfers. For facilities, the Lower Cheung Sha Beach has changing rooms, shower facilities and toilets. The Upper Cheung Sha has refreshment kiosk, BBQ area, changing rooms, shower facilities and toilets. Alternatively, visitors can enjoy eating out by the sea at the famous South African restaurant, Stoep among many other restaurants in the area.

Another fun way to spend a day or two in the quieter part of Hong Kong, try camping at the Pui O Camp Site on Lantau. It runs under the control of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The site offers 50 vacancies with standard camping facilities including BBQ and shower facilities. Pui O Village is also known as home to the friendly water buffaloes; many of whom are wild and roam freely (a great photo opportunity).

Silvermine Beach is probably the most convenient beach of all on Lantau Island as it is just about a 10-minute walk from the Mui Wo Ferry Pier (aka Silvermine Bay). The beach got its name from the old silver mines that operated on the island years ago. Silvermine Beach is a nice spot for family and friends to spend half a day swimming together or just relaxing. Nearby there are few good places to eat including the Silvermine Beach Hotel.
Location: North of the Mui Wo Ferry Pier, about a ten-minute walk following the seafront.
There are a lot of things to see and admire here, including wild flowers like orchids and rare animals like the Hong Kong newt. These, together with the beautiful scenery, make the island a perfect place for trekking. Some are easy paths and some include steep climbs. It might be a wise idea to visit Ngong Ping Nature Centre (NPNC) in Ngong Ping Village before planning your trip or simply to call (852) 2259 3916. They offer hiking information about Lantau as well as other island information.
Opening Hours: The NPNC hours are Mon – Fri 10:00 – 18:00, Sat from 10:00 – 18:30 and Sun from 09:00 – 18:30.

Discovery Bay (often referred to as DB) is a big real estate development with a pleasant sandy beach. It offers good leisure and recreation facilities and activities for all the family including sailing and swimming as well as waterfront restaurants and cafés. Prices here are not necessary cheap.
