1. The Social Bar

An independent, well-run restaurant and bar combo along Jalan Telawi 3, The Social Bar is a long-running Bangsar stalwart that has been in operation since 2001. Over the years, it has developed a loyal following among nine-to-fivers, which means that things really get going after sunset when its Happy Hour deals come into play. From Tiger, Guinness and Kilkenny to Heineken, Strongbow and Paulaner, pint prices are pretty decent.

Simple and trendy, its interior design of rough wooden floors, black plastic chairs and wooden tables, and wine racks along the walls, creates an intimate yet chic look. Besides beers, the bar has decent cocktail choices – we are big fans of the sangrias, frozen margaritas, mojitos and long island ice tea. It is not the type of place to get footloose and fancy-free, rather a great way to wind down after a day at work.

2. Ronnie Q’s

Laidback and homey are just some of the words that best describe Ronnie Q Bar. A neighbourhood sports bar with a loyal fan base among older expats and locals, it has been around since 1992 and its longevity can be attributed to the simple recipe of friendly staff, reasonably-priced drinks and tasty food.

It features British tavern-like decor, with black-tiled floors, dim lighting, dark wood tables and chairs, and an Old West saloon-style bar. We like the fact that thoroughly efficient staff members keep things running smoothly. Drinks-wise, cocktail choices are limited but you can expect to find house pours and five types of ale on tap: Guinness, Kilkenny, Paulaner, Strongbow and Tiger. The food menu is representative of the pub’s English roots.

3. Ril’s Steakhouse & Bar

Ril’s Steakhouse & Bar, a two-storey chandeliered, baroque-style eatery in Bangsar, is well-patronised by expats and locals alike for its meaty steaks and unique cocktails. On weekdays, Ril’s Bar is a sleek 1920s-styled speakeasy where guests can sip on their favourite cocktails in a sophisticated and relaxed setting. From Friday onwards, it becomes a lively dance venue with guests DJs spinning electro tunes until the wee hours of morning. Drinks-wise, Ril’s Steakhouse & Bar serves an assemblage of wine by the glass but it’s the bar’s extensive and intriguing cocktail menu that merits a visit here – highly recommended is the Shapiro Effect, a sweet and savoury concoction made with Hendricks, gin, sake, rock salt, syrup, celery bitters and sliced cucumbers.

4. La Bodega Lounge

Largely resembling a Spanish hacienda, with its bright and colourful interior design, La Bodega Lounge is certainly no stranger in Bangsar’s nightlife scene – after all, it has been around since 1999 along Jalan Telawi 2. Well-liked for its extensive tapas menu and classy ambience, the award-winning bistro continues to draw in a steady stream of loyal regulars.

Inviting and intimate, the bar (set above the bistro’s dining room) has several seating sections – high tables and chairs surround the bar, with snooker tables tucked into the back. Around the music stage, there are comfortable sunken couches, perfect for playing board games that the bar supplies and sipping on a cocktail. There is a good selection of Spanish, South American, Australian and Californian wines, but we love the cocktail menu’s delicious, potent thirst quenchers.

5. SIX Cocktail Lounge

SIX Cocktail Lounge, situated in Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar suburb, is a trendy bar that serves an extensive array of whiskies, wines, beers, and creative cocktails all in some rather laidback settings. A great place for after-work drinks and casual gatherings, SIX draws a steady stream of mostly expats and locals staying in Bangsar and Petaling Jaya. Perched above La Creperie de Caroline along Jalan Telawi 3, SIX Cocktail Lounge is a quiet gem compared to most of Bangsar’s plethora of often overcrowded bars and pubs.

Holding up to 100 people, the spacious and fully air-conditioned lounge is presents a mix of high stools, dark wooden furnishings, and plush leather couches. Fronting the open bar is Imran Hossain, SIX’s award-winning mixologist, who concocts some deliciously unique creations for the more adventurous of drinkers, as well as a range of signature and classic cocktails for those that like to play it safe.

6. WIP

Located inside Bangsar Shopping Centre, WIP is certainly no stranger to change – after all, its name used to be an acronym for Work in Progress, with the bistro’s décor emulating that of a construction site with exposed ceiling pipe work, buffed concrete floors and construction tape. It later experienced an extensive renovation phase that resulted in an urban tropical setting, now christening itself Whipped into Place.

Whatever the theme, the food (a delicious mix of local, western and Northern Indian cuisine) has always been good, with so many locals considering it a staple on their list of places to dine out at. It is not a roaring dance club – rather, a cheerful and sophisticated place to have a drink. The bar offers premium and boutique labels, as well as champagnes, but it is the creative cocktails list that impresses, including over 21 different sangrias and mojitos. Themed-beverage nights make it especially worthwhile to come here – for example, Sundays is Get Sparkly with Bubbly and Tuesdays is Bullish with the Beer.

7. Gridiron Sports Cafe & Lounge

Though the monochromatic black and white colour palette used for its interior design lends an air of class to Gridiron, it remains a true blue sports bar, complete with snooker tables and dart boards. Some of its standout features include friendly service and a menu of hearty, comfort food which will make you want to linger long after the game is over.

A popular location for UFC fight nights and FIFA soccer, watch your favourite team compete on one of the bar’s large projectors screens or on one of its 33 flat screen TVs. Drinks-wise, the best time for beer is on Friday at 16:00 when a frosty mug will only set you back RM4; besides that, ladies are also well catered for with great-tasting long island iced teas and mojitos that make sports-watching sessions that bit classier.

When we input Mezze Bistro & Lounge onto this list, we knew there might be some confusion – after all, it is best known for its superbly good dining room on the ground floor. However, the bistro is topped by an equally-good lounge where you can kick back, relax with a dink and enjoy some seriously good live music.

There is plenty of mixing and mingling with friends and business networking that goes on here, with décor that is homey and hip – think, bare red brick walls, Oriental-style rugs and fat naked light bulbs. Drinks-wise, there are more than 40 single malt whiskey choices available, as well as beers on tap, and a fine selection of wines from major wine-growing regions around the world. When it comes to music, you will usually hear a mix of ballads, beach music, blues, smooth jazz and samba but we love Friday and Saturday nights when a live band plays jazz and R&B tunes

9. Sino The Bar Upstairs

Largely deserving of its popular reputation, Sino The Bar Upstairs is a lounge that hits all the right notes when it comes to a nightlife spot. Located above its famous dining room, you are treated to tasteful decor and a roomy high-ceilinged space able to accommodate 100 people. Cocktails are a little pricey, starting at RM35, and its eclectic clientele are usually dressed to the nines, but the atmosphere is friendly and intimate.

Expect to hear jazz, swing jazz and lounge tunes, plus there are live jazz performances from local bands, as well as international guest artists, every first Monday of the month. Another highlight for this lounge is the fact that there is no cover charge.

Nexo Restaurant & Bar, accessible within a 10-minute taxi ride from KL Sentral Station, is a trendy eatery that boasts an extensive wine list and authentic Spanish fare.
